1.1. Research Motivation and Purpose
Echoes are generated when we scream in a mountain, cave, or artificial place other than these natural environments, in an underground parking lot or a large hall. These echoes are caused by the reflection of sound on the walls of the room, and the duration of these echoes, that is, the reverberation time, depends on the surface area, volume, and sound absorption rate of the room. Our exploration team was curious about how this reverberation time depends on the shape of the cave, so we started this experiment. The reason why the cave was set as the exploration area is because it was judged that it is best to use the reverberation of sound and it is suitable for analyzing and comparing the reverberation due to the various structures of the cave. In addition, Jeju Island, the exploration area, is a volcanic island, and there are several lava caves such as Manjanggul, Ssangyonggul, and Hyeopjaegul, so the cave was selected as the experimental site. It was expected that these lava caves had relatively few topographical elements such as stalactites and stalagmites like lime caves, so the overall structure was simple and the walls were smooth, making it easier to understand the structure. In these lava caves, the shape of the cave was identified with a laser range finder, and the reverberation time using a tuning fork was measured to determine the reverberation time and related cave structures. This experiment was conducted to compare the reverberation times of the cave structures of the control group and the various experimental groups through this experimental process, and to find out what factors affect the reverberation time and how the obtained reverberation time differs from the predicted one.
